Objectives: This study was conducted with the purpose of identifying the effect of workers¡¯ sleep hours and work patterns on depression and finding out what differences there are by age.
Methods: The analysis was conducted on 13,191 workers aged 19 or older using raw data from the 6th (2014), 7th (2016, 2018), and 8th (2020) of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to analyze the relationship between each variable and depression, and stratification analysis was conducted to see the difference by age.
Results: The shift work group with less sleep hours(<6) was 2.3 times(OR=2.34, 95% CI=1.51-3.62) more depressed than the day work group with normal sleep hours(6-8), and the day work group with less sleep hours(<6) was 2.2 times(OR=2.19, 95% CI=1.70-2.83) more depressed. In particular, in their 30s(OR=3.93, 95% CI=1.42-10.89), 50s(OR=3.89, 95% CI=1.64-9.21), and 60s(OR=3.52, 95% CI=1.54-8.04), the shift work group and less sleep hours(<6) had a significant effect on depression.
Conclusion: In this study, less sleep time and shift work were related to depression and differed by age group. Therefore, for early detection, early treatment, and prevention of depression symptoms, a customized strategy for each life cycle is required to improve work patterns directly related to economic problems and ensure sufficient sleep time.
